Every single activity that occurs within the human body is focused around keeping you alive and healthy. Through 1000’s of years of development the human body has grown to be quite a fine-tuned organism that can modify well to the specific conditions that are placed upon it. Most of us turn out to be uneasy when we are hungry or we become parched, we get a suntan whenever high amounts of UV rays can be found, we grow calluses to safeguard the skin, etc. So what happens when we wear out muscle mass in the gym? If you answered something to the effect of “my muscle size increased”, then congratulations! You happen to be absolutely right. Simply by battling against resistance beyond the muscle’s current capacity we now have posed a threat to the musculature. The entire body identifies this as possibly damaging and as an all natural adaptive response the muscles will hypertrophy (increase in size) to safeguard the body against this particular threat. As we regularly increase the level of resistance from week to week the body will continue to adapt and get bigger.
